Today marks the first birthday of this little blog-baby Terrence and I have raised. Parents often have fascinating "first date" stories, and we are no exception. Danko Jones (a performer once described to me as "what it would be like if the WWF made music together") played a big role in getting us where we are today. So happy birthday little blog-baby. Here's a lullaby or two for you...

Danko Jones - Baby Hates Me

Danko Jones - Lovercall

sountrack to a good saturday.

landslide baby (demo) - beulah

Terrence and I had a discussion on the way home from watching the rat movie the other night about taste and how it might manifest itself through different generations. I posited that a good DJ in the late 70's was probably at the taste-maker level that a well respected blogger would be at these days. All the while I thought about my own pop and his days as "Rockin' Ron Erickson", a shaggy-headed, flannel-shirted, late 70's DJ in Seattle. He recently found some audio from his days in DJ booth and after 26 years of hearing all the stories, I actually got to hear Rockin' Ron himself. And now, so do you.

So, we have a sort of unwitting guest blogger on this little site today...my dad.

Rockin' Ron Erickson doesn't want to be lonely, and dedicates to us, Elton John's Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me.

Ps...That song really was his choice for the blog and I'd personally like to give him a thumb's up for chosing the most triumphant sounding song ever.

paul mccartney and wings - maybe i'm amazed

Today is the day we celebrate our Independence Day! My neighbors have chosen to celebrate by hiring a mariachi band for their family gathering. That's a picture I snapped of them right there. Me, on the other hand...I'm on my way to a bbq.

I'm back...and I'm tan.

This goes out to Rex, who was unavoidably detained the day of the AC show. New song, just began making its way around the blogroll today and just happens to be named after my favorite tv show as a kid. I googled Robert Stack after hearing the song. Turns out he's not around anymore.

Animal Collective - Unsolved Mysteries

It's a rare song that makes you think "yeah...I should really do that". The advice Prototokyo gives us in this one is something I plan on taking to heart.

Prototokyo - Bananas Du Brasil

(Also, the image search for Prototokyo was boring so here's a picture of Danny being force-fed a chip.)

I meant to post this song years ago. Sorry for making you wait.

Bonnie Prince Billy and Tortoise - Daniel

Wednesday, May 02, 2007

many of you are aware that i hate space. maybe it has to do with the everyday reality of the incomprehensible, or perhaps to do with my own expanding feelings of insignificance. for whatever reason, if i never had to think about outer space again, i'd name myself content.

i'm in love, however, with those early days of space exploration, when our ambitions reached hardly further than our own earth's orbit. i seeped more than one tear of joy last sundance in the shadow of the moon, and wished i'd been born sooner, when immediate space was ours and we spun rockets off this planet with glee-shouts and beaming optimism.

this track then is that: those innocent days, when the final frontier seemed not so very far away and we were the kings of our small universe.

the tornados - telstar

some late summer night, when the highway's unfolding empty up ahead, turn this up, up and let the earth fall away beneath you.

Monday, March 26, 2007

Subtle - Middleclass Haunt

This guy's a nut. Bad puns. Knives spliting open creepy mannequin heads on stage. The works. This song is filled out by Dan Boeckner, his Wolf Paradeness.

round 2

salt lake city - the dwarves

in the interest of fairness, a less flattering view. though, i suppose if i were the dwarves and my worldview necessitated constant abject debauchery, slc wouldn't be high on my list either.

Monday, March 19, 2007

salt lake city - the beach boys

home s. home.

Friday, March 16, 2007

Ferraby Lionheart - Before We're Dead

This should be your new favorite, if for no other reason than the sweet face he makes when he sings really high. It looks like he ate something sour then stuck his head out the window of a jet going at full speed.

the kinks - living on a thin line

what are the next 30 years?

Sunday, March 11, 2007

Some truly amazing music was made in Brazil in the late 60's and early 70's. These songs are a sampling. The one little brother I have is about to spend his next two years in Brazil, so this post is for him.

Lula Côrtes & Zé Ramalho - Nas Paredes da Pedra Encantada, Os Segredos Talhados por Sumé

Joyce e Nelson Angelo - Vivo Ou Morto

Thank you's to Motel de Moka for leading me to these.

The Veils - Advice For Young Mothers To Be

I have to admit that I partly just like the creepy undertones to the name "The Veils".

Goths.

Thursday, March 01, 2007

spencer kingman - aljazeera

rain runner, necktie needer, darkroom dweller, a fine musician amongst things.

Sunday, February 25, 2007

I've lost count of how many hours I spent today watching back episodes of 24. I feel bad about myself as a person when I start to think of watching 12 episodes of one tv show as an accomplishment worthy of any sort of praise. I like to think of this as a song you can listen to when you start to look back on your life and think "wtf?" The change toward the end makes it all worth while.

Grizzly Bear - Fix It

Wednesday, February 21, 2007

Panda Bear - Take Pills

I don't have anything to say. I just like this. A lot.

Monday, February 19, 2007

Happy VD all. Here's a list of songs for you to make love to your lover to. I know that last one doesn't really fit, but I don't have a sneakier way to let the internet know that it's my birthday today too.

Karl Blau - Ode To Demons

The Shivers - Beauty

Darondo - Didn't I?

The Free Design - Michelle

Incorporating a lisp into your speech simply because the king has one is just plain foolish. We all know that. So the fact that they even pronounce "Barcelona" incorrectly is a dead give away. They're not from Spain at all. Damned liars. Were they from the great city they would pronouce it BarTHelona, but you know what, I'm glad they dont. Give it up already, Spain.

This is a happy bit that sounds like the Polyphonic Spree, maybe with the cult-ish thing toned down a few notches. Listening to this song I was struck by one thought...I think Lee the Douche is really going to like this one. Here you go, man.

I'm From Barcelona - We're From Barcelona

Tuesday, January 23, 2007

I'm a girl, and thus, am hardly impervious to cute girl voices. Feist, Mirah, whatever you got, I'll listen to it. I'll probably sing along to it, alone, in my car, and dream of being up there on stage with that lilting alto easing out of me. That wishing-i-were-something-i'm-not paired with my recently discovered penchant for playing the air piano have earned this song innumerable plays.

Casey Dienel - Doctor Monroe

Tuesday, January 16, 2007

gonna find you - operation ivy

this record is skipping class, mountain dew, the basement, cruising the 'stang, and losing too many dollars to matt at tetris. 16 wasn't so bad.

take warning - operation ivy

Thursday, January 11, 2007

This seems like a song Lou Reed would've appreciated if he'd been knocking about in a late 1970's Cambridge. I like when Hitchcock ask if I "would care for a lump of steak?".

The Soft Boys - I Got The Hots

Tuesday, January 09, 2007

yojimbo (titles) - masaru satoh

possibly the most astonshing and appropriate theme from any movie i've ever seen. someone once asked me what song i'd want to play everytime i walked into a room. one worthy day, i hope it will be this song.

i love this still of mifune from the film. so fantastic.

special thanks to dinosaurgardens for fielding a fine site and posting many treasures like this one.

I've noticed recently that my subconscious mind is far more interesting than my conscious one. After weeks of being plagued by nightmares and anxiousness, I've been blessed with some really creative, sweet dreams involving a theme park called Dr. Pepper Land, rollerskating with Mike Kelly, Mexico, and a picture book called Mean Serpents. May the good dream luck continue.

Saturday Looks Good To Me - Cant Ever Sleep

The Donkeys - In The Morning
